I’m in the midst of a sermon series on Elijah.

We often get caught up in all the exploits of the prophet. They are quite the adventure and make for great entertainment and instruction. Even the language is some of the most salty in all the Bible and can create a delight in both the telling and the hearing of Elijah’s encounters with the prophets of Baal and ol’ queen Jezebel.

As many times as I’ve read the stories, I’d missed this part:
But after a while the brook dried up, for there was no rainfall anywhere in the land. (1 Kings 17:7)

Elijah had been told to go hide in a gorge to escape Ahab and Jezebel after his pronouncement that it would not rain again until he gave the word. Hiding in the Kerith ravine, ravens brought him food each day and the brook gave him water.

Given that he had called for a drought, eventually it affected him as well. The brook that brought him water dried up. His food stopped coming, he had no water and God has been silent.

Sound familiar?

What do you do when God goes silent and life hits a brick wall? Are you sitting by a dry brook?
