I suppose that in may ways I really am a geek.
Back in my undergraduate days, I did own multiple pairs of brightly colored, checkered pants. Unfortunately, I can’t claim that on my geek resume because everyone owned those back in the early 70′s. I even had several pairs of elevator shoes that had color combinations that reminded one of a psychedelically-inspired bad drug trip; but, again, it doesn’t count for the same reason.
I did own an AMC Gremlin, twice. I always wanted a pen pocket protector but could never find them in the stores. I thought white shirts, skinny ties and black frame glasses were cool. I even got swoony-eyed seeing rocket scientists and other NASA types on television.
And I’ve always been sensually attracted to computers.
Wow! I feel much better after getting that off my chest.
Now, back to my geekness. I did something last Sunday that made me feel like a geek on steroids. At The Message Church we use a software program called “ProPresenter” to run all of our video, graphics, song lyrics, etc. We run it off of both Macs and PCs. Typically, the person who is preaching has to rely on someone in the sound booth to advance any slides or graphics he wants to use. No matter how good the person assisting is, it always leaves the speaker wishing he could personally control the flow of imagery he’d like to present.
I came across an app (“application” for you non-geeks) that allowed me to extend the computer running ProPresenter, wirelessly, to my iPad. Since I began preaching from my iPad a few months ago, this almost seemed like geek nirvana. Not only could I have my electronic Bible and any notes directly at my fingertips, I could also control the computers and projectors in the worship center from the same device. A flick of the finger could give me Bible passages, video, graphics, notes, ANYTHING, instantly available on the big screens to my audience.
For a speaker, at least this one, this seemed too good to be true.
This past Sunday I put it to the test and went live during prime time. I was a bit nervous and there were several glitches that occurred right up to the last minute. But, it worked!
And that warmed the cockles of my little geek heart…

Just think if you still wore the white shirt, skinny tie, & thick rim glasses you would be considered high fashion!
